Kurt Bench of Shared Legacy Farms stalebedding with a version of the new Tilmor Spyder Basket Weeder! This system works the top 2 inches of soil and agitates all sides of the raised bed. The spyder basket with tines and discs helps maintain the shape of the bed while uprooting weeds on all surfaces. This allows for a weed free and uniform seed bed before planting. The primary benefit of using spyders in place of wire baskets is that they are better suited for harder soil types or crusted soils. This Torsion Weeder and Spyder combination can be used to throw dirt toward or away from the crop row, while also working to eliminate small in-row weeds. Independently, spyders act similar to hiller discs and are a good hilling tool for crops such as potatoes, carrots, etc.

Lydell and Romain demonstrate how to assemble different kits for the Terrateck Manual Plastic Mulch Layer. The manual plastic/biodegradable mulch unroller is a tool to facilitate and improve the speed of mulch laying operations on the ground. Fully adjustable, this unroller can accommodate rolls with a width of 90cm to 160cm . This tool is used by two operators pulling the unroller. The moldboard at the front of the tool is used to open the soil and dig a furrow, the mulch roll is thus unrolled, pressed and stretched at the bottom of the furrow using the wheels. The parabolic discs placed at the rear of the machine are used to bring the soil back to the edges of the tarpaulin. The drip spool holder unrolls the hose as the mulch sheet is laid. This tool is ideal for greenhouse or open field work.

In this video Ryan Thiessen gives an overview of the undercutter, and offers some guidance on how they are used while answering frequently asked questions. The Thiessen Undercutter is ideal for loosening the soil for harvesting carrots, garlic, parsnips, and other root crops. It works by digging below the crop to loosen the soil to eliminate the need for a pitchfork or shovel to speed up the harvesting process. It is recommended to use an undercutter 10 – 12 inches wider than the bed width. Ryan also talks about how to add weight and how much can be applied to each size of undercutter.
